Open Doors

Open Doors is a program of the Mount Vernon School District aimed at supporting students who are at risk of not completing high school with their diploma. Northwest Career & Technical Academy is an approved Open Doors partner. Students will earn a high school diploma upon completion of the Open Doors program.

Project-based Learning

The Open Doors program at Northwest Career & Technical Academy is like no other program! Building off of the highly successful interactive learning model we utilize every day in our academy courses, our Open Doors students work toward obtaining their high school diploma through a series of real world, project-based modules.

During each module, we develop learning communities so students can collaborate and dive deeply into the topic - all while making significant academic gains as well as enhancing their career and college readiness.

Performance Assessments

By measuring achievement through performance-based assessments, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities in a real world, hands-on context. This departure from traditional assessment models (tests and quizzes) may help some students on their educational journey.

The core of the Northwest Career & Technical Academy Open Doors program are three fundamentals of student choice, committed learning communities, and real-world project-based context.

Student Eligibility

To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

• Currently or previously enrolled in the Northwest Career & Technical Academy
• History of commitment and success in their Northwest Career & Technical Academy courses
• Student must be between the ages of 16 and not older than 21
• Student must be committed to earning a high school diploma
• Student is not on track to graduate, not currently in school (other than NCTA), or at risk of not graduating
